Sanna Hukkanen is a comics artist from North Karelia in Finland. The protagonists of her comics and graphic novels are old trees, mushrooms and often also human beings. She explores the relationship between human and non-human, finding sources in mythical forest paths, folklore, autobiography and contemporary environmental struggles.
Sanna Hukkanen has a long history in community art projects that use grassroots comics to give voice to minorities and activists. She has organised comics workshops with language minorities, asylum seekers, people with disabilities and environmental activists in Scandinavia, Russia and Tanzania. Her background is in fine arts, as well as in activism. Comics can combine these two and she believes that comics have great potential to make a change.
